Why do I hear about drivers double clutching out of first gear? How could that possibly be faster then depressing the clutch pedal once?

Isn't related to speed, it's related to questionable synchros, and making a mo betta shift.

Not really necessary about 99.9999% of the time, at least not in something "modern."

it's not. Don't do it unless you're driving something like an old semi truck

questionable synchros or the lack of any synchros at all

True. We've got a few things laying around that definitely do not have any syncromesh of any sort. Those generally don't get double clutched as much as they get floated.

You're hearing about it because there are drivers who take The Fast and The Furious seriously. To them, there's more knowledge there than any other source. Including their smartphones. Which they could use to get information on manuals in less than a seconds.

"You need to double clutch bro, unless you overnighted a new tranny from Japan. Those don't need double clutching because they have two clutches inside already..."

I saw Senna do it in that NSX video...

Senna did it in that NSX video, that's why I am asking...

It goes back to the days when manuals didn't have syncro's and instead cars had "crash boxes" (sliding mesh transmissions if you want to be technical) and double declutching would allow for smoother shifting. Basically it allows the gears to match speeds which reduces the chance of them catching one another and grinding. It helps even with transmissions that do have syncro's but isn't entirely necessary unless of course your syncro's are on their way out.

Because they are stupid and they have watched Fast and the Furious.

It is completely unneccessary in a car with a syncronized transmission (i.e. all modern cars) unless the syncros are broken.

I just rewatched that video, at half speed, at the 0:46ish mark where it looks like he double clutches. 1. He's not coming out of first, he's into second before the end of the pit lane. 2. I honestly think the transmission was bound up or something and he had to bail out of the shift. Look at his hand motions, it's like he tries 3rd, and it won't go into gear. Not quite a double clutch as much as it looks like he's getting a do over.

it's not faster, but it is necessary for older cars with no synchros, or primitive ones. If your car does have synchros, double clutching will just extend their life.

I just watched it too. Yeah, he missed the shift into fifth, and had to do it again.

So I guess double clutching was required because he granny shifted. :)

True story. I hated to admit that I was finding fault in Ayrton Senna's shifts, but, hey, sometimes transmissions aren't as cooperative as we'd like them to be. That's also why I watched it multiple times at half speed to make sure I saw what I was seeing.
